Cartoon Monickers; An Insight into the Animation Industry

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

To conduct a study of this dimension without the assistance of numerous persons in the animation industry would have been impossible. The people in the Industry-from "apprentice cel-washers"to the pioneer writers and directors-have been most helpful, generous of their time, and encouraging. Among the creative people who provided significant help are Fred ("Tex") Avery, Art Babbitt, Ralph Bakshi, Mike Barrier, Howard Beckerman, Nick Bosustow, Stephen R. Bosustow, Al Brodax, John Canemaker, Jim Carmichael, Bob Clampett, Sody Clampett, Don Crafton, Shamus Culhane, Gene Deitch, David H. DePatie, Phil Eastman, Isidore ("Friz'") Freleng, Jack Hannah, Ed Hanson, Helen Hanson, Hugh Harman, T. Hee, Winston Hibler, Cal Howard, Dick Huemer, Rudy Ising, Wilfred Jackson, Chuck Jones, Mark Kausler, Isidore Klein, Walter Lantz, Jeff Lenburg, Harry Love, Mike Maltese, Leonard Maltin, Robert McKimson, Otto Messmer, Grim Natwick, Joe Oriolo, Hawley Pratt, Bill Scott, Ben Sharpsteen, Joe Simon, David Smith, Nick Tafuri, Iwao Takawara, Lloyd Turner, Jay Ward, Bill Weiss, and Jack Zander.
Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, John Canemaker, Mike Barrier, David Smith, Joe Oriolo, and Virginia A. Duck read drafts of the manuscript and made numerous valuable suggestions which I readily acknowledge with my deep appreciation.
Most of the original art in Cartoon Monickers is from the personal collections of Nick Bosustow, John Canemaker, Bob Clampett, Gene Detich, Chuck Jones, and Edith Rudman of the Gallery Lainzberg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). Studios which provided illustrations are Bosustow Productions, DeP4ie-Freleng Enterprises, Hanna-Barbera, King Features, Jay Ward Productions, MGM, Ralph Bakshi Productions, and Terrytoons/CBS-Viacom.
Assisting in various phases of production were Rosemary Renn Gerber and James M. Lyman. Eris-Marie Bunnell provided photographic assistance throughout the project.
From the Bowling Green University Press, I was most fortunate to have Ray and Pat Browne guide the manuscript through editing, production, promotion, and distribution. They were assisted by Becky Berry and Kathy Rogers. I am pleased to have Ray and Pat as friends as well as professional colleagues. Without their concern-which led to a major Department of Popular Culture Studies and an active publishing division-the study of popular culture in America would be severely limited.
